Optical domes are mainly used to protect precision instruments and cameras in harsh environments. Familiar domes are made of CDGM H-K9L, Schott N-BK7, Ohara S-BSL7, such materials have better transmittance,  excellent optical property, mechanical capacity is superior to other high-index material, having good acid resistance, alkali-resistance and humidity-resistance. It often be used in extreme environments for a long time, having well protection effect. Can be found in undewater system, protecting outdoor monitoring equipment and radiation measuring instrument.

High precision fused silica domes

There are many types of fused silica, the most common include UV grade fused silica and IR grade fused silica. UV grade fused silica is manufactured synthetically through the oxidation of high purity silicon by flame hydrolysis.  The UV grade demonstrates high transmittance in the UV spectrum, but there are dips in transmission centered at 1.4µm, 2.2µm, and 2.7µm due to absorption from hydroxide (OH-) ion impurities. IR grade fused silica differs from UV grade fused silica by its reduced amount of OH- ions, resulting in higher transmission throughout the NIR spectrum and reduction of transmission in the UV spectrum. OH- ions can be reduced by melting high-quality quartz or using special manufacturing techniques.

Si/sapphire domes

Optical sapphire has excellent mechanical properties, the hardness of Morse magnitude 9, has the very good compressive strength and compression strength and bending strength, its expansion coefficient for only 5 x10-6, melting point is 2050 degrees, the working temperature can reach 1900 degrees, has good thermal shock and high temperature resistant performance, at the same time it also has good radiation resistance and electrical insulation performance. Its optical transmission performance is also very good, its transmittance range is 0.15~6 microns, covering ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, mid-infrared and other bands. But, because optical sapphire material mechanical performance is excellent, hardness is big, processing sapphire material, especially spherical sapphire, sapphire ball cover is very big.
